Posted by The Ginger Wanderlust.

If you’re dreaming of an unforgettable South Africa safari, look no further than AfriCamps Waterberg. This family-run safari camp offers a perfect blend of adventure, luxury, and natural beauty, making it the ideal destination for an authentic South Africa safari lodge experience. It’s also a malaria-free zone so you don’t need to take any medication to go!

Ultimate South Africa Safari Lodge Experience

AfriCamps’ tents redefine camping with their spacious and luxurious interiors. Each tent is perfectly designed to provide the comforts of home while immersing guests in the stunning surroundings of a game reserve! The tents are equipped with plush beds (sleeps 4), fans, a fully functioning kitchen (yes they have electricity!), and an en-suite bathroom with a heated shower, ensuring a comfortable stay in the wild.

The real highlight, however, is the private terrace with a hot tub and braai area (South African BBQ). It’s the perfect spot to unwind and soak in the beauty of the reserve. We even had ostriches come right up to our terrace! Thankfully the Waterberg game reserve doesn’t have any predators (except a few leopards which stay far from humans), so you can relax in peace. The tents are also raised and there is a barrier between them and the game reserve.

South Africa Safari – Game Drive vs Horseback riding safari

Our stay at AfriCamps was filled with exhilarating activities that brought us closer to nature. AfriCamps Waterberg offered both the usual game drive AND a horseback riding safari (which has been on my bucket list for years!)

The game drive was an absolute highlight. We ventured into the heart of the reserve with an experienced guide who shared fascinating insights about the local wildlife and ecosystem. The thrill of spotting giraffes, zebras and wildebeest in their natural habitat is an experience I’ll cherish forever.

Equally exciting was the horseback riding safari. Riding through the reserve on horseback offered a unique perspective of the landscape and wildlife. The gentle pace allowed us to quietly observe animals in their natural setting, creating unforgettable moments, like galloping alongside some gazelle!

What to eat when on a South African safari

As our tent had a fully functioning kitchen we were able to make all of our meals. Which was perfect, as you can imagine that game reserves are quite rural.

We stopped for supplies at a supermarket before arriving. AfriCamps Waterberg also offer breakfast and braai packages, delivered right to your tent, which we also enjoyed! The breakfast package included bacon, eggs, bread, granola, yoghurt, fruit and juice. The braai package included a variety of meats, fresh salads, and all the accompaniments needed for a traditional South African barbecue. Preparing and enjoying our meals on the terrace, with the sounds of the wild around us, was a magical experience.

Best Time for a Safari in South Africa

The best time to visit South Africa for a safari is during the dry winter months from May to September. During this period, the weather is cooler, and the sparse vegetation makes it easier to spot wildlife. The lack of water also draws animals to waterholes, providing excellent viewing opportunities. The summer months from November to March can be hotter and wetter, but they are ideal for bird watching and seeing newborn animals.

I personally went to Africamps Waterberg in March and had a great time. It did get hot during the day but we just made sure to do our safaris very early or around sunset.

Getting to AfriCamps Waterberg from Johannesburg

Reaching AfriCamps in Waterberg from Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport is straightforward. Here’s how you can get there:

By Car: The drive from Johannesburg to Waterberg takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. We rented a car via Discovercars, a comparison site which allowed us to find the best deal.

By Shuttle: There are several shuttle services that operate between Johannesburg and Waterberg. This option is convenient if you prefer not to drive and would like to relax and enjoy the journey. However it is on the pricier side.
